Suleiman Ali said that the Syrian crisis has gone through several stages, from peaceful demonstrations and militarization to the Salafi Islamic character and international interventions.
Ali’s speech came during his participation via the “Zoom” program in the eighth dialogue session held by Ezdina within the project “A Constitution That Protects Us”, Wednesday, April 4, 2021, with the participation of a group of young women and men from the city of Amuda.
Ali explained that these interventions deepened the crisis for Syria and made matters difficult for the Syrians to agree on the minimum demands that the Syrians made with the start of their revolution.
Ali added that regional and international interventions in Syria, such as Iranian, Turkish and Russian interference through the veto in the Security Council or through direct military intervention, in addition to the international coalition partnering with the Syrian Democratic Forces, made the situation difficult for the Syrians.
Ali pointed out that the path led by the United Nations is very weak, and nothing was achieved from the six-point plan announced by Kofi Annan, because the points were unclear, including the fate of Bashar Al-Assad and how to resolve the crisis.
The human rights activist noted that the international community has failed to deliver aid to the besieged areas, and even to areas that suffer from difficult economic conditions, such as Northeastern Syria.
Ali pointed out that Syria is facing a major and deep crisis and that he does not believe that there are solutions soon, pointing to the statement of UN envoy Gier Pederson about the recent constitutional committee talks as "disappointing" after ten years of war and destruction.
Ali said that in the head of every Syrian there are thousands of questions that he does not find an answer to. Where is the Syrian crisis heading, entering the eleventh year, in the absence of a clear international will, and the lack of capabilities of the Syrians to solve their problems.
Ali added that the political decision is not in the hands of the Syrians, neither the opposition nor the regime, and the Turks control the decision of the opposition represented by the coalition, Russia and Iran control the regime’s decision, and that these parties are not serious about finding a solution to the Syrian crisis.
Ali pointed out that the Syrian crisis will be resolved if there is an international will, and the solution will not be through the Security Council or the United Nations, but rather the solution will be if the Russians and the Americans agree on that.
Suleiman Ali concluded his speech by saying that the Syrian crisis has become an international crisis, because the Syrians have failed to solve their problems since the beginning, as there are tens of thousands of detainees, and millions of IDPs, therefore the Syrians have lost the opportunity to find a solution on their own, and there will definitely be an external solution.
