Leaders and representatives of a group of Kurdish, Arab and Syriac political parties and officials in the Autonomous Administration discussed with representatives of community activities in Qamishlo, the work of the Syrian Constitutional Committee within a project supported by the US State Department.
The project "A Constitution That Protects Us", which is supported by the US State Department, comes about a year and a half after the formation of the Constitutional Committee, and about two months after the fifth round failed to make progress in dealing with any of the constitutional contents.
The project, which will last for three months, aims to submit a set of recommendations to the United Nations in order to be taken into account during the drafting of a constitution for the country, or even if the formation of the Constitutional Committee is reconsidered, after 18 sessions were held in several cities in northeastern Syria, targeting five groups, which are media professionals, youth, women, clerics and community leaders.
The announcement of the formation of the Constitutional Committee, in 2019, was accompanied by objections from Syrian political parties, especially the Kurds, as the Constitutional Committee consists of 150 people, including only 7 Kurdish representatives, while the mini-committee consisting of 45 representatives includes only one Kurdish representative.
The small committee, consisting of 45 people, represents three parties: the Syrian government, the opposition and civil society equally, but all the meetings of the small committee have been described as "failed" so far.
The decision-making mechanism in the Constitutional Committee includes obtaining the approval of 75% of the members of the committee, which is considered extremely difficult when trying to discuss and make decisions related to crucial issues, which are very sensitive to the parties participating in the committee.
