The co-chair of the Free Media Union in the Al-Jazeera region, Avin Youssef, said that the new Syrian constitution must include several points that were not written in the previous constitution of Syria or even in the four constitutions that passed on Syria.
Youssef participated, along with a group of women and civil activists, in the third dialogue session that the Ezdina Organization devoted to talking about women's concerns and demands from the Syrian Constitutional Committee, which was held on Tuesday, at Ezdina's office in the city of Qamishlo/Qamishli, as part of the project "A Constitution That Protects Us".
Youssef added that the representation of women within the Syrian Constitutional Committee is not credible, because the criteria and principles on which they were chosen are not known, and they do not represent all women in Syrian society.
Youssef added that the constitutional committee formed is not credible, whether they are representatives of the opposition, representatives of the regime, or even representatives of civil society organizations because they do not fully represent the components of the Syrian people.
Youssef indicated that with setting the quota for women's representation in the Constitutional Committee to be at least 35 percent, adding that the representation of women in local councils, parliament and administrations should not be less than 35 percent.
Youssef emphasized the importance of women's representation, pointing out that women were marginalized before and during the Syrian crisis, adding that the Personal Status Law, which relies on Islamic legislation and the male mentality, must be changed.
Youssef added that the plurality of components and religions in Syria are marginalized and are not properly represented, noting that several Syrian components were excluded within the Geneva conferences, in addition to the exclusion of representatives from the regions of north and east Syria.
It is noteworthy that Ezdina Organization launched a new project, in northeastern Syria, under the title "A Constitution That Protects Us", started on February 23, 2021, for a period of three months.
